A Prayer to Pray When You Are Grieving

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crusted in spirit.” Psalm 34:18

Grief hits us hard, but God says He’s close to the brokenhearted and saves those crushed in spirit. If you have lost someone close to you, lean into God. He is a God of comfort. As you ask, He will help you in your time of need.

Here’s a prayer you can pray to help you in the healing process of grief.

Father God,

It’s hard to wrap my mind around this loss, Lord. I feel sad, and heartbroken, as if there’s a heavy weight on my chest. I was not ready for this. I know death is inevitable, but I wasn’t expecting to lose them. I’m crying out to you in my pain and time of deep grief. Help me to accept this with your grace. As your word says, there is a time to be born and a time to die. A time to weep and a time to laugh. A time to mourn and a time to dance. I know it’s okay to grieve, but I need your help in my time of grieving. And I don’t want to grieve as someone without hope, I have hope in you, my Lord and Savior. You are a God of hope! You work all things together for the good of those who love you and I love you!

Lord, help me to not fall into despair but face my grief head on, willing and ready to be molded by you. Be my refuge and safe place. You say in your word, you are close to the brokenhearted and help those crushed in spirit. Help me, Oh God! I feel crushed, but I trust you and know you are near. I need strength to go on without them. I need rest for my sleepless nights. I need your comfort. You see me in my suffering and remember me and comfort me. Thank you, Lord, for you are the God of comfort! I may be brokenhearted but help me to not lose heart. I know when Jesus returns, all believers, will be united together and with you for eternity. I look forward to the day when I get to be with you, Jesus, and see the one I lost once again.

Lord, help me to honor them and cherish the memories I have with them. I know they want me to not only go on living, but thriving, and worshipping you the whole time. Praise you Lord Jesus Christ, Father of compassion and God of all comfort!

In Jesus Name, Amen.
